Ingredients
                
1/2 c
firmly packed brown sugar

3/4 c
softened butter

33/50 c
light molasses

1 ea
egg

1 1/2 t
grated lemon peel

1 1/4 t
cinnamon

1 t
vanilla

1 t
ginger, powdered

1/2 t
baking soda

1/2 t
salt

1/4 t
baking powder

2 1/2 c
flour

1 t
allspice


Directions
Combine brown sugar, butter, molasses egg and lemon peel.  Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until smooth and creamy.  Add remaining ingredients.  Reduce speed to low, continue beating until well mixed.  Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  On well floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness.  Cut with cookie cutters, place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets.  Decorate with cookie decorations if desired.  

Bake 6-8 minutes or until no indentation remains when touched.  Remove immediately to cool completely.  Frost after cooled.

Frosting for Cookies (optional)
Ingredients
4 c
sugar, powdered

1/2 c
softened butter

4 T
milk

2 t
vanilla extract


Directions
Combine ingredients in small mixer bowl.  Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes.  Add food coloring if desired.  

Use to decorate cooled cookies.
